Could Actor Sylvester Stallone be Heading to Washington?

Sylvester Stallone has been asked by President-Elect Donald Trump to serve as the chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The NEA is a government-funded agency that’s been giving grants to artists since 1965 and has thus far given out $5 billion for art projects all over the country.

Although Stallone is an unlikely pick to head the agency, it wouldn’t be the first time someone from the world of acting would lead the organization. In 1993, actress Jane Alexander was tapped for the role, which she capably filled until 1997.

Stallone is actually no stranger to the arts, having been an accomplished painter since the 1970s. Stallone is represented by a high-end gallery in Switzerland and has had a solo show at a contemporary art museum in Nice, France. Stallone’s work is complex and often incorporates images of clocks or watches to signify the element of time.

Many people are unaware Stallone is also a movie director and a writer as well as an actor. Stallone wrote the movie Rocky, in which he starred, in just three days. The movie went on to be nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 1976, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. Rocky won the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director that year and was the start of a long and successful career for the “Italian Stallion” that continues to this day.

In 2015, Stallone was nominated for a second Academy Award for the same role of Rocky Balboa in the spinoff movie Creed, making him the actor in Hollywood with the longest span of time between Oscar nominations (40 years).
