Sen Al Franken: Otto Warmbier was Murdered by North Korea

Over a year ago, American student Otto Warmbier was convicted in North Korea and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. Travel to North Korea, while not available directly out of the United States, is possible for those interested in seeing exactly what it is like in the hermit nation.

From all accounts, the view is sterilized and controlled, so the real living conditions of citizens is never seen. When visiting, what a person can and cannot do is also heavily controlled and watched. Otto Warmbier attempted to take a sign as a souvenir. He was arrested for this and, with a just-for-show trial lasting a matter of minutes, he received his conviction.

According to Otto Warmbier’s parents, the Obama administration did very little, if anything, to request his release. Opinions on this vary wildly, from those who wanted the president to do everything in his power, to those who believed it would show weakness in the eyes of the North Koreans and Otto knew the risks when attempting to take the sign.

Regardless of what former President Obama did (or didn’t) do, Warmbier was eventually released back to the United States, but was in a coma upon his release. Within a short amount of time of arriving back stateside Otto passed away. Doctor’s haven’t officially released the cause of death but they did note that Otto had lost a significant amount of brain tissue consistent with trauma to the head.  Democratic Senator Al Franken (the former comedian) believes Otto Warmbier was murdered by the North Korean government. Is this an act of war on North Korea’s part? Watch the video to get the Senators take on the issue.
