Right now, President Trump is fighting hard to level the playing field for American steelworkers, combating the dumping of foreign steel that has driven the US steel market down in a way that has made it hard for American steel companies to compete. In response, the Steelworkers Union has issued a statement saying that they won’t forget what President Trump has done for them.
What’s interesting is that the Steelworkers Union – like most unions – has predominately supported Democratic candidates in the past. However, after years of the Democrats they helped vote into office not representing their best interests, American steelworkers have finally found a voice in President Trump.
Promising to represent the interests of disenfranchised Americans such as steelworkers was largely what allowed Trump to win Democratic stronghold states such as Pennsylvania in 2016. Now that the President is making good on these promises, you can expect his support among Americans in these states to only increase, boosting the odds that Trump is able to pull off another historic victory in 2020.
Regardless of the political outcome of Trump’s move to support American steelworkers, it’s uplifting to see the President taking action to assist a group of people that have suffered under the US’s foreign trade policy for far too long.
