Five days ago, President Trump began the process of recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In doing this, Trump is breaking from years of US precedent on Israeli-Palestinian relations – and it’s been a long time coming.
From a strategic standpoint, Israel is a key ally to the United States, largely because of the capabilities of their intelligence. No other country in the world has their finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the Middle East quite like Israel, and their intelligence is second to none. Recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moving our embassy there will only help strengthen our relationship with Israel and provide us better access to key intel to help boost our national security at a time when more intel on ISIS and other terror groups is desperately needed.
Of course, as is always the case with anything President Trump does, there are plenty who are up in arms about this decision. The truth is, though, that Israel is our ally, not Palestine. The days of trying to appease both parties by recognizing Israel without recognizing Jerusalem are finally over.
