Will the NFL ever learn to stop shooting itself in the foot? If the latest news is any indication, it may not.
Facing declining TV ratings and attendance for NFL games following the controversy of players not standing for the national anthem, one would think that the NFL would jump at the opportunity to show that they support the armed forces and are ready to put the controversy behind them. However, when the Veterans organization AMVETS tried to submit an ad for the Super Bowl encouraging fans and players alike to stand for the national anthem and make donations to help veterans, they were turned down by the NFL.
The league stated that their reasoning behind rejecting AMVETS’ ad was that they didn’t want to show any ad that could be construed as political. It would seem, then, that the idea of supporting veterans and our military is simply “too political” for the NFL to endorse.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of ratings Super Bowl LII receives after this series of gross missteps and miscalculations by the NFL. If supporting veterans is “too political” for the NFL to stand by, perhaps the NFL itself has become “too political” for many of its viewers.
