Ivanka Gets the Last Laugh in Retail War

As the late 80s song goes, sometimes “You Don’t Know What You’ve Got ‘Til It’s Gone.” That line could easily apply to retailer Nordstrom’s, which stopped carrying items from Ivanka Trump’s fashion line late last year. At the time, Nordstrom’s cited falling sales of the line caused by boycotts, which were called for by liberal groups such as GrabYourWallet.

But many sources claimed at the time that sales figures were not the reason for the department store’s decision; rather, according to internal documents from the company that were leaked on the Internet, politics had very much to do with the choice.

Well, now perhaps Ivanka is getting her just desserts, because new sales figures released by purchasing research firm Lyst show that sales are up by a significant amount this year, during a season that’s traditionally slow for retailers.

“Since the beginning of February, they were some of the best performing weeks in the history of the brand. For several different retailers, Ivanka Trump was a top performer online, and in some of the categories, it was the [brand’s] best performance ever,” said Abigail Klem, the president of Ivanka’s label.

Her heels and dresses have done particularly well, but every category the brand offers merchandise in has seen notable positive gains. “We actually feel super optimistic because, I think, one, a lot of people support Ivanka, even across both political parties,” said Klem.

“And then I think a lot of other people feel like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know Ivanka had a shoe line.’ ‘Oh, I didn’t know she had a handbag line.’ And they’re buying it.”

In addition, Ivanka’s signature fragrance holds two top-selling places on Amazon and is occasionally out-of-stock. Reviews for the fragrance show that many buyers are buying the fragrance specifically to show support for her father’s policies. Watch as Fox Business details the excellent news, which is nonetheless likely still a thorn in the side of Nordstrom’s.
