NRA Sues over Governor of U.S. Virgin Islands Seizing Guns and Ammo over Irma

Hurricane Irma left a huge amount of damage in the Caribbean, including in the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI).

But according to NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch, the governor of the USVI, Kenneth Mapp, ordered the local National Guard to seize people’s firearms and ammunition as part of emergency preparations for the storm, in order to prevent civil unrest. Specifically, the governor’s order said the Guard was “authorized and directed to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of their emergency mission.”

However, as American gun owners in the USVI and elsewhere are probably aware, this action is both illegal as a violation of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and as a violation of USVI local ordinances. While Governor Mapp quickly denied that he ordered the Guard to take anyone’s guns (he’s since called the matter a “misunderstanding”), a thorough reading of his text plainly shows the words “seize arms,” so we have to wonder what Mapp is talking about.

As Fox’s Tucker Carlson recounts, he can readily recall the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when the National Guard was illegally directed to seize people’s guns by the city of New Orleans and Democratic New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin (who’s since gone to prison for corruption). At the time, there was a scandal over New Orleans police murdering citizens and ransacking Walmart stores, among other crimes committed that were observed by local residents.

To be clear: the aftermath of a disaster or crisis is likely when guns are needed the most, both for defense of one’s property and for personal protection. Whether it’s Katrina, the Los Angeles riots in the wake of the Rodney King case or the more recent violence associated with Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, firearms are a must-have for citizens looking to protect their lives and homes from looters, criminals, rapists and other offenders. Any orders such as Mapp’s are blatantly illegal and unethical and need to be investigated as quickly as possible by the NRA for potential misconduct prosecutions.

Watch as Carlson and Loesch discuss the finer details of this chilling event.
