Supreme Court Ruling May Crush Unions

The United States Supreme Court is poised to render a ruling that could permanently dismantle public sector unions. John Stossel interviews the unassuming school teacher who lit the match that could burn down the unions in this video.

Rebecca Friedrich filed a lawsuit against the California Teachers Association (CTA) after the union squashed her attempts to organize a district-wide pay cut in an effort to save several colleagues’ jobs. After the CTA’s unwillingness to protect jobs, she stopped paying union dues and her case made it all the way to the High Court.

Although Friedrich’s case faltered on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court when Justice Antonin Scalia passed away, the mantle has been taken up by another California public sector employee.

Government employee Mark Janus has carried the fight against public unions that he and Friedrich agree have become money-grabbing bullies. They say the values of the unions are all about dollars and disregard the values of people like Friedrich who want to protect peers and are willing to take necessary pay cuts.

With Justice Neil Gorsuch filling out the Conservative wing of the High Court, experts expect the powerful public sector unions to lose. That could open the door for members across the country to stop paying dues and effectively end the sometimes-tyrannical practices of organized labor.

Take five minutes to hear what workers and nervous union bosses say about the case in this John Stossel report.
