Teacher Panhandles for School Supplies

Is this what American education has come to?

In Oklahoma, an elementary school teacher, Teresa Danks of Tulsa, was recently caught on video panhandling for money on a street corner to raise money to buy school supplies for her classes. This phenomenon, whereby a teacher is not given the necessary funds for classroom supplies and then takes the needed money out of their own pocket, is repeated daily in too many of our nation’s secondary schools. And this is on top of already disturbingly low salaries for a majority of our nation’s educators. As the team on Fox and Friends argues, few jobs in America are as important as teaching our nation’s schoolchildren; they’re the future of our country, and to see their required resources being ignored is heartbreaking.

Fortunately, as Danks explains, this particular story has a happy ending. But many of our nation’s teachers aren’t so lucky. Particularly for parents, it’s likely worthwhile to have a discussion about whether kids’ needs in public schools are really being met. No teacher should have to be out on the street raising money for what a school system rightfully should provide. Watch as this viral story is fully explained by the team on Fox.
