Short of epic poetry, comedy TV is probably the hardest genre of entertainment to pull off successfully. It’s really tough, and if there’s one person who’s done the most with the least, it’s Roseanne Barr. Roseanne is a naturally funny person, a talented comedian, a terrific comedic writer, performer, and a generally fascinating person.
The first incarnation of the Roseanne show back in the 90s was an absolute phenomenon. It had all the energy of Married With Children but it was very well written and it was consistently funny. The performers had huge amounts of chemistry and the story-lines were always great.
All of that is amazing by itself. But the fact that the show was rebooted with heavy political overtones and was even more popular than it was the first time is unbelievable. That has never happened on TV. Never.
But of course, not only was it insanely popular, not only did it break all the rules- but it also was met with critical acclaim. Indeed, the Roseanne reboot should have been a total game changer. But, as you know, the networks could not have such a successful show promoting Donald Trump or the MAGA movement. So they waited for a chance to ax Roseanne and they got it when she made her fateful tweet.
