The newest addition to the Marvel cinematic universe – Black Panther – should have just been another addition to a highly successful line of movies. Perhaps some credit was due to Marvel for featuring a black superhero and a majority black cast. However, in the grand scheme of social, political, and racial issues, Black Panther barely even qualifies as a blip on the radar.
Not so for leftists, though, who are now heralding the release of Black Panther as one of the greatest milestones for the black race since slavery was abolished. What should have been another silly yet enjoyable Marvel movie has been elevated to a position of absurd significance it simply does not deserve. Some leftists have even gone as far as to say white people should not see the film in theaters so that black people enjoying the film won’t have to endure their presence.
Leftists point to Black Panther as a sign of cultural awakening. They say the movie provides a role model that black children everywhere can look up to. Black Panther is, of course, none of these things. It’s a movie, and not a movie with any particular artistic or social significance at that. If children, black or otherwise, need role models to look up to, fictional Hollywood characters is the last place they should turn.
