OAN recently celebrated the 107th anniversary of the birth of the Great Communicator, Ronald Reagan, by picking what it considered the 14 best Reagan quotes ever.
From early on in his political career, Reagan was known and loved for his classic one liners like “Money may not buy you friends, but it will help you to stay in contact with your children” and “Flattery is what makes husbands out of bachelors.”
Speechwriters helped find a few of his quotes but most came from his now famous stack of 4×6 note cards written in his own hand. Though Washington insiders had long heard about those note cards it wasn’t until 2010 that they were found by the staff of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in a cardboard box marked ‘RR’s desk.”
We have the full collection of Reagan’s notes, including some he never used in a recorded speech thanks to Reagan biographer Douglas Brinkley. His book The Notes: Ronald Reagan’s Private Collection of Stories and Wisdom offers a treasure trove of quotes from the Gipper.
Reagan spent much of his adult life gleaning plain, practical words that communicated his ideals from magazines, speeches, books, and even poems. His best-remembered quotes come from historical figures like Winston Churchill and surprising sources like the 19th-century French economist Frederic Bastiat.
